Cheerio! It’s been an interesting week in the travel industry. First, the TSA came out with a new rule to allow small knives & golf clubs on planes. The flight attendants are all up in arms and I can’t really blame them. We’ve all gotten used to flying without pocket knives so why change it now? And besides, you know not all of the TSA agents are going to get the memo so it’s going to create problems at security. If there’s one rule they should relax it’s the three ounce liquid ban since it’s a health hazard. If they don’t do that the government should at least ban airports from selling bottled water at astronomical prices.

The other major news story is that sixty-thousand federal workers responsible for securing borders have been told they will face furloughs beginning in mid-April because of forced spending cuts. It’s too early to tell what effects it will have on travelers but it could create an unpleasant atmosphere. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Last week, I was writing from Berlin and this week I’m in London. I worked long hours to get all of my posts up in time for today’s newsletter so you can see all the fun I’ve been having. It started with my flight on SWISS to Zurich and a seamless transfer to Berlin. I was in Germany to attend ITB (my photos), the world’s largest travel conference, and although that wasn’t much fun I was able to escape the unfathomably massive convention center and hit some of the historic sights (my photos). I also stayed in a hotel chain that you’ve probably never heard of even though TripAdvisor ranks them #3 out of the 659 Berlin hotels. It’s a great place to stay when traveling with a family since they have apartments with full kitchens, washing machines and dryers.

From Germany I flew to London (via Copenhagen since it was a third of the price) and got the royal treatment at the ME London. It’s a new, sexy hotel from Melia, and it’s so hot they have an Aura Host who -- get this -- writes the welcome message on the guestroom mirror (photo). While in London I had afternoon tea and wrote a post on the best places to partake in this English tradition. Then I took a walking tour of London’s TV and film locations and managed to go up The Shard which is now the tallest building in the European Union. If that wasn’t enough I caught the musical “A Chorus Line” (it’s back), and toured around the shops of St James's which is where the Royals buy their goods.

FYI: I was in England as a guest of Visit London to promote their new contests where travelers can win one of six themed trips to London.
